You sometimes need to edit the contents of /etc/*-release to facilitate
installing some applications.For example, I remember having to change
this in FC3 to install Oracle 10g

Therefore if someone has done this and not reversed the changes the
results may not be quite "definitive" :-) Having said that not restoring
any changes to /etc/*-release after playing with them would probably
give rise to some funkiness next time an app uses during installation...
