pi_bind error: /dev/ttyUSB1 No such file or directory

Try changing the software settings to /dev/ttyUSB0 and see if that works. The trick is to do a tail -f /var/log/messages, then press the hotsync button on the PDA and see what the kernel recognizes, then do the sync on the software.  Also you can try a different client as well, jpilot works well for me personally.
