Too many.  There's really no excuse for it, either.  All the major
free software message user agents[1], aka MUAs, such as Netscape (at
least as long as Jamie was there) and Evolution do it, and of course
Mutt, the Emacs MUAs, and even Pine do it.  Furthermore, users of
Outhouse and Pewdora are aware of what they're missing, to the extent
of complaining that they reply to messages that aren't the current
head of thread (even if the subjects are left alone, this is all too
common due to somebody's clock going wonky).

Still, non-threading MUAs are quite common, and we have to cope (read
"beat up newbies" ;-).

You will definitely notice an improved user experience!

[1]  Note: no distinction between "mail" and "news", but unfortunate
in the modern context of "instant messaging", where the netiquette
really needs to be quite different, IMO.
