Playing with Ubuntu the other day, I found that both it and Mepis are a
bit more difficult to get working than some others. I wound up having
some success by using a scim-anthy port--on my
http://www.scottro.net/jpninpt.html I have a link to it in the Deb
section, where I say go to the scim-anthy page and do a search for
Ubuntu.
Add the suggested sources from the link to /etc/apt/sources.lst or
whatever it's called. First uninstall scim, anthy and any of the uim
stuff you put in.
Then,
apt-get update
You'll get a warning that the sources can't be verified or something.
Then, apt-get install scim-anthy which should put in a copy of scim and
and anthy while it's doing its thing.
Then,
export XMODIFIERS="@example.com=SCIM"
export LC_CTYPE=ja_JP.utf8
Hit ctrl+space and see if you get any joy in a uxterm.
Good luck. :)

Giles: I need you to take Spike for a few days.
Xander: What?
Spike: What?
Anya: What?
Spike: I'm not stayin' with him.
Giles: I have a friend who's coming to town, and I'd like us to
be alone.
Anya: Oh, you mean an orgasm friend?
Giles: Yes, that's exactly the most appalling thing you could
have said.
