When you boot Knoppix, check out the out GUI options with the desktop option. KDE is fat. The others are much lighter. Also check out http://www.rule-project.org/ and and http://www.xfce.org/. Xfce used to be one of the options for Knoppix, but was removed from the CD version a few versions ago. The DVD version warrants investigation.
