That depends on the GUI. 

When you boot Knoppix, check out the out GUI options 
with the desktop option. KDE is fat. The others are 
much lighter. 

Also check out http://www.rule-project.org/ and 
and http://www.xfce.org/. Xfce used to be one of 
the options for Knoppix, but was removed from the 
CD version a few versions ago. The DVD version 
warrants investigation.
