Amen brother.  It is both excellent and overpriced. 

Advance Programming in the UNIX Environment (aka APUE), Second Edition 
by W. Richard Stevens and Stephen A. Rago 
is a superbly written serious book 
that is the standard against which other books are measured. 
It is expensive ($75), but not overpriced. 

The second edition has been updated for the current popular flavors 
of UNIX including Linux, BSD and OS X. 

Prentice Hall/Addison Wesley has a 40% discount offer until January 10th.

APUE2 would be a bargain for anything under $50.
