I asked the same question about two, three years ago, there was somebody then on the list whose company did this kind of work. I forget details, but do check it out. If you are very lucky, on the other hand, you can plug the disk back in as a non-boot drive and try to read it. It's possible that you just have a scratch on the boot sector or the like, and all of the data you didn't install from the CD is still safe! You can often use software like dd(1) to get your hands on many of the undamaged sectors, even if the file system is trashed. Etc.
