Thanks, I've copied this message over to my "Need to study" folder.  As 
for reproducing it - it was perfectly predictable - out of 15 attempts 
to use the address book, there were 15 vaporizations of the program!  
100% failure rate!  Anyway, by abandoning 1.8a3 and going back to 1.7.8, 
the problem is fixed.
