I have two 40G Seagate drives that are about 2 1/2 years old and have
had no problems so-fare.  Were you running smartd from smartmontools
http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/ It should give you advanced
warning of drive failure.  Did the drive have sufficient cooling.
Temperature can have a significant effect of lifetime.
