There are not any outwardly noticeable signs at first.  The switch will seem to
be going out for unspecified periods of time at night.  It starts hanging out
with other switches of questionably reliability.  You may start to become
suspicious that it is withholding packets unjustly or maybe even just for
spite.  You may even notice new traffic in the form of illicit web activity
such as adult websites and all night chat rooms.  Some have even reported
finding curiously left open ports where one might assume that other forms of
band and unwelcomed traffic could conveniently let themselves in.

Don't be dissuaded.  You must intervene!!  Only the proper level of guidance,
support, concern and interaction can prevent your router from going down that
road where the bad routers go!

(sorry, couldn't resist - anyone wanna expand on the analogy?  All network
administration and no satire makes net-admins dull geeks)
