Steve is one of the least likely people on the face of the Earth to
ever utter the statement "[the love of] automation is the root of all
evil".

You misunderstood. He was criticising OOo, not automation, which is,
as we all know, much better than doing things by hand. People make
mistakes--computers do not. Therefore, once a person has perfected his
automaton, it will crank out as many doohickies as you require,
without a single error. This is the quite lovely result of
determinism, the sort of thing that (along with, according to Neal
Stephenson, German mathematicians) got Alan Turing all hot and
bothered.
