-=-=-=- Announcement: 1/15 TLUG Technical Meeting -=-=-=-=- Meeting information Date: January 15 (Saturday) Time: 14:00 - 16:30 (doors open 13:30) Place: Ubiquitous Business Technology meeting room 3-42-5 Hongo, Boa Building 2F Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo 113-0033 (map at http://www.ubit.com/company/map.html) Topics: 1. "Knoppix and Morphix live-CDs: What they are, how they work and how to roll your own." by Edmund Edgar 2. "Experiences using Squeak to teach computer skills to Children" by Alain Hoang Edmund Edgar will give a talk about re-mastering Knoppix / Morphix to make customized live-CDs. By hacking live-CDs like Knoppix and Morphix, you can make your own GNU/Linux distribution that boots directly from a CD, without the need for an install. I'll give a basic outline of what the live-cds do and how they perform their magic. Then I'll take a look at what you have to do to twist them to your own evil ends. Alain Hoang will discuss teaching computer skills to children using Squeak. Squeak is a free SmallTalk-80 implementation that has been the basis for a wide variety of software projects. One such project is the eToys system, which has been dubbed a 'media authoring tool.' This talk will be a recounting of my personal experiences teaching the eToys system in Squeak to a small set of children and some of the pitfalls I've run into and experiences learned. Come and compare notes about how you keep track of things. Who knows, you might find some of the ideas nifty. Other items on the agenda are: 1. Introduction of new members, news about Linux/Open Source, general announcements, Q&A 2. Auction All Linux users and supporters of open source code and free software are invited to attend this Tokyo Linux Users Group (TLUG) meeting. Membership is open to anyone. There are no membership dues or entrance fees. After the meeting, we will continue chatting over a few beers. About TLUG ---------- TLUG is a non-profit, non-political organization established in June of 1994 to exchange information on the use of Linux and Free Software Foundation tools. TLUG has an active mailing list, home page, and regular physical meetings. Discussions are primarily held in English, but non-English speakers are encouraged to come and participate. We especially want to encourage Japanese people to attend and will make efforts to support a bilingual meeting. TLUG hosts technical meetings every odd month on the 2nd Saturday, and nomikai's every even month on the 3rd Friday. The TLUG home page is available at http://www.tlug.jp For any instructions or info before the meeting: Zev Blut ............... 090-5788-8067 Alberto Tomita ............... 080-3463-9256
