I had this question about my digital camera, and the folks on the
linux-usb list were very helpful. Apparently, you can look
in /proc/bus/usb/devices to tell if your phone is recognized as a
storage device. My digital camera had this:

T: Bus=03 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=00 Cnt=01 Dev#= 4 Spd=12 MxCh= 0
D: Ver= 1.10 Cls=00(>ifc ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS=32 #Cfgs= 1
P: Vendor=04a9 ProdID=30ba Rev= 0.01
S: Manufacturer=Canon Inc.
S: Product=Canon Digital Camera
C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=c0 MxPwr=100mA
I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 3 Cls=06(still) Sub=01 Prot=01 Driver=(none)

The Cls in the last line give the class as ``still'', which means it's
not accessible as storage.
