Start a gnome-terminal from a utf8 locale: $ LC_ALL=ja_JP.UTF-8 gnome-terminal --disable-factory Then select your favourite input method (xim module with kinput2 or im-ja). I have a custom xmodmap so that I can input accented letters with the right alt key and both of the mentioned input methods will accept these characters even in kanji mode. HTH.
