There are several (too many indeed) options. One of the major options
is to use EasyPackage, which is a package management system like Fink
or OpenDarwin, but its packages support Japanese because their
developers are mostly Japanese. Canna should start when you turns on
your iBook.

Apple's X11 differs from most others as it doesn't reflect the
environmental variables you set in .xinitrc. You need to modify (or
create0 the file:
  ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist
and add the variables such as

LANG = ja_JP.EUC
LC_COLLATE = C
LC_TIME = C
XMODIFIERS = '@example.com=kinput2'

To use OOo with Japanese, you need to read ill-structured document at:
http://openoffice.s16.xrea.com:8080/pukiwiki/
pukiwiki.php?%5B%5BMac%c8%c7%c6%c8%bc%ab%a5%d3%a5%eb%a5%c9%a4%ce%be%f0%c
a%f3%5D%5D

I do not understand this website very much. What I have got is:
1. Download OOo and libX from http://ring-test.e-trees.jp/waooo/mac_Ozk/
Note:
Japanese menu version: OOo_Mac_111J.tar.bz2
English menu with Japanese input support version:
OpenOffice_111bin.tar.bz2
With English menu version, you will probably need to change menu font
to Japanese one.

2. replace downloaded libX11.6.2.dylib with the original in
/usr/X11R6/lib

3. in downloaded and extracted OOo directory, type ./setup
