- Subject: [tlug] Mojibake in kword and abiword
I created an .rtf document in Monopolysoft Word 2000. Both kword and abiword display its contents as mojibake. I've even done this: bash% LANG=ja_JP.eucJP LC_ALL=ja_JP.eucJP sh sh% locale [all Japanese] sh% kword x.rtf sh% abiword x.rtf In this environment, in kword, I can insert Kanji by pressing shift-space and using canna. The newly inserted characters appear properly, but the original characters remain mojibake. I neglected to test abiword this way. Both kword and abiword have dialogs to set fonts. The menu patterns differ but the results are similar. After clicking on the appropriate menu to get a list of fonts, it take about 15 minutes to bring up the entire list of fonts. I recall reading that something can be done to some SuSE options in order to speed this up, but don't recall the details. (Fabian-sensei please remind me.) I vaguely recall that Red Hat does this faster because of its use of a font server. However, the result affects nothing. I can click on a menu entry for "select all" and select any Japanese font that I wish, but the original text remains mojibake in the new font, and the newly inserted Kanji (in kword at least) remain Kanji. How can I retrieve the original Kanji?
