Thanks Chuck, I'm writing to the list now. I tried searching through it
but couldn't find anything useful.
RH's hardware compatibility list also doesn't have this particular drive
on it. It does state under the aic7xxx chipset that 7810 chipsets are
not supported and my model is aic7899 ... guess it's not supported?
I also found a web page with linux drivers for the aic7xxx :

I don't know if I downloaded the right files or not, but when asked if I
had a driver disk I said yes and used the files (img) I got from that
site. They loaded up fine but I still got sent back to the same screen
and the same error popped up on the console ...
I really do need to find a way to install Linux (RH) on this type of
machines as I have 8 of them just lying around doing nothing! They do
have RH 7.1 installed on them so obviously someone in the past found a
way of installing RH ... I just can't figure out how short of putting in
another HD and using that to install from.
