I hate to confess my utter ignorance on this, but I have avoided the matter
of Japanese input with most applications because I started doing everything
in Emacs. 

So David, do you mean, for example, something like this:

[chuck@example.com chuck]$ gedit --XMODIFIERS=@example.com=kinput

or this?

[chuck@example.com chuck]$ XMODIFIERS=@example.com=kinput gedit

Neither works, so perhaps it is something else again.
