Hello! This is not an area I am particularly well versed in, but I do hear much reference to Mobile IPv6 in discussions on the development of IP based mobile /wireless networks. You asked about applications for IPv6, the only direct answer I can think of is not new applications, but much improved access to existing applications. NAT stops lots of direct communications and hence use of applications, and in particular interfere with IPsec protocal usage. The other big area in application usage is mobility. The mobility (coupled with low latency, more efficient packet sizes and packet encryption) is vital feature. Within the use of mobile IPv6, devices not on their home report a care-of address (their temporary network address on the foreign network) to their home agent. The home agent intercepts and reroutes the first packets of any new transmissions to the care-of address of the device and also reports the address-change to the network / device initiating the transfer, so that further packets go direct and not via the home network. As someone else said, IPv6 would be a very interesting issue which it would be nice to have a TLUG technical meeting on. Well worth getting used to IPv6, as it is already here and will become dominant. More so for people in technical reserach in Japan than elsewhere as the Japanese Govt has put an emphasis on subsidising IPv6 compatible projects. Yours, Tim
