The fact that it has not yet been declared Debian Stable does not mean
it is unstable.  I'm sure it's at least as stable as RH 7.3 or Mandrake
8.2, probably better.  It's just as big, too.  Probably bigger :-)

Any major distro (Mandrake, Red Hat, TurboLinux, SuSE, Debian, etc.) 
should have no problem with fairly standard hardware and even with
a lot of not-so-standard stuff.  What hardware do you have that
is causing problems for you?
