Pressing that should land you at the console which is usually at a low
resolution (120x80? I cant remember the numbers).

By 'half screen or smaller' do you mean at a higher resolution?

You can get this with either the SVGA text modes or the framebuffer mode if
your video card and kernel support it. They are both usually set from
the boot loader so check when /boot/grub.conf was last changed.

You can also change the former with 'SVGATextMode' and the frame buffer
settings with 'fbset'.
