I had this same problem, and based on help from several people, I am using this little shell script to start Evolution: #!/bin/sh killev oaf-slay kinput2x -atok LANG=en_US LC_CTYPE=ja_JP.ujis LC_MESSAGES=en_US XMODIFIERS="@example.com=kinput2" evolution & This gets me Evolution in English, but with Japanese display and input working. However, I gave up on Evolution because it encodes subject lines in UTF-8 and there is no option to change this. Since I'm not really interested in having Japanese mail with mojibake subject lines, I continue to use mutt, which is really the best MUA for a sysadmin anyway. Jonathan
