If it's already ext3 then the grep should show nothing and you don't have anything todo. In that case it is a bit weird that you have to fsck your partition as this usually shouldn't be necessary with ext3... You can check if there is a journal on your filesystem with dumpe2fs, i.e.: melchior:/home/ranma# dumpe2fs -h /dev/hda1 dumpe2fs 1.24a (02-Sep-2001) Filesystem volume name: <none> Last mounted on: /mnt Filesystem UUID: e4eb0572-7cb6-4904-bfcb-b1d0ed2650e9 Filesystem magic number: 0xEF53 Filesystem revision #: 1 (dynamic) Filesystem features: has_journal filetype needs_recovery sparse_super Filesystem state: clean Errors behavior: Continue Filesystem OS type: Linux Inode count: 1523712 Block count: 3042301 Reserved block count: 152115 Free blocks: 791726 Free inodes: 1366419 First block: 0 Block size: 4096 Fragment size: 4096 Blocks per group: 32768 Fragments per group: 32768 Inodes per group: 16384 Inode blocks per group: 512 Last mount time: Sun Sep 9 16:04:02 2001 Last write time: Sun Sep 9 16:04:02 2001 Mount count: 16 Maximum mount count: 20 Last checked: Tue Aug 21 21:14:46 2001 Check interval: 15552000 (6 months) Next check after: Sun Feb 17 20:14:46 2002 Reserved blocks uid: 0 (user root) Reserved blocks gid: 0 (group root) First inode: 11 Inode size: 128 Journal UUID: <none> Journal inode: 948 Journal device: 0x0000 First orphan inode: 0 The has_journal filesystem feature flag indicates this is a journaled partition. -- Tobias PGP: 0x9AC7E0BC
