apt-get install xemacs21-mule-canna-wnn
xemacs -l vm -f vm

Not only do you get working Japanese, but people won't give you grief
for poor formatting and/or HTML in your email. Disclaimer: GNU Emacs
is fine with me despite my obvious bias, but VM works better with
XEmacs.

I'd suggest the jp patch for Mutt in a kterm or rxvt-i18n, but last I
heard it seems to have gone AWOL. :(

Not only is Netscape a terrible solution for email anyway, but it has
historically been very unstable with Japanese. And Java. And any
other feature starting with J (jwz jinx, anyone?)

Yeah, it's possible, but in the context of the rest of the trip he's
planning it's a killer. Also, isn't it about time for the annual
Nikko Marathon Traffic Jam, I mean, foliage-watching mess? You know,
the ones they take aerial photos of, showing a continuous jam
extending from 23 km toward Tokyo on the Tohoku-do, up the mountain,
and back down the mountain all the way to the highway interchange?

I'm with Hiroo on this one. But then we're both gaijin. :-þ

By the way, this is the third time I've posted this information. maybe
we should start a FAQ? ;-)
