I have "done" Nikko twice on a one-day basis, most recently in June this
year as guide for some Nihongo-less furriners. It was a big day out, and
meant leaving early and getting back late (Kitasenju-eki) but was pretty
successful. I/We hired an 8-seater minibus at Tobu-Nikko station which we
parked near the Toshugu Shrine while we "did" that area, then drove it up to
Chuzenji-ko and environs for most of the afternoon.

My first trip to Nikko, in 1981, was in a one-day tour group, and I
think was well worth it. Sure two days is better, but if you only have a
day....
