There are many different 9xxx; I suspect that most differences among
them are trivial, but I hadn't intended to rely on that assumption.

You mean, refresh rates?  I had them written down and ready to serve up,
too. (No, that'd be refresh rates for the screen rather than the video,
I suppose. Well, in effect video and screen make up an indivisible
package.)

Hmm. Is there some Linux analogue of the not entirely ridiculous feature
of Windows whereby you can specify a bog standard SVGA (or even VGA) video
card and monitor combo at first, and then twiddle with the settings
later?

Gawd, I have to go back to work. (I can't decide if my official responsibilities
are more or less useful/frustrating than not quite managing to install
Linux!)
