there's no such thing as a core package, just core programs and data.
It's a major deficiency of current package systems that they ignore
this.

The right thing to do is to learn to build packages.  It's not very
difficult; eg, for kernels under debian you basically replace `make
bzimage' with `make-kpgk --revision local+0 binary_image' (or
somethign like that, Ihaven't done this in a couple months :( ).

X is admittedly harder than others.  But not that much.
