It looks like I made the same stupid mistake. After installing locale-ja, XIM works fine for XEmacs (GNU-Emacs crashs when trying to use XIM though). But XIM still doesn't work with kterm (I have kterm-6.2.0-9JRPM60 from the Linux Japanese RPM Project installed). The kinput protocol works, but XIM doesn't. I don't see any error or warning messages any more when starting `kterm -xim' and no messages appear in the debugging output of kinput2 either. Are you using the same version of kterm?
