Dekirujan! I can print. Thanks to all of those who gave advice. (Only, I'm not exactly sure what caused it. So much for the scientific method of eliminating one variable at a time. ) Upgraded to ghostscript 6.0 without a hitch (thanks Stephen, your instructions were clear and helpful), and now ps2pdf works like a champ. Strangely, so does pdflatex all of a sudden, even though I didn't touch my tex distribution. Hmmm. I must have done something wrong yesterday when I tried that. The pdflatex method also seems to generate slightly smaller files, but I can't tell the difference in print quality. Don't know how it works, but it does, so I guess that's good. Thanks. john (who is now going to go try and learn more about where tex gets its font information from) -- jseebach@example.com -- Ah! Ancient forest!
