Im using Red Hat 6.1, I picked it up as a retail package. Now that there are a couple of people responding, I guess Ill have to review what Ive done so far. If it makes any difference, the kernel is 2.2.12-20smp (Im using dual celerons). ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.10 route add default gw 192.168.1.1 at this point, ping 192.168.1.1 gives me this: =====start===== ping 192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1) from 192.168.1.10 : 56(84) bytes of data. from 192.168.1.10: destination host unreachable =====end===== route -F tells me this: =====start===== destination / gateway / genmask / flags / metric / ref / use / iface 192.168.1.1 / * / 255.255.255.0 / u / 0 / 0 / 0 / eth 0 127.0.0.1 / * / 255.0.0.0 / u / 0 / 0 / 0 / lo default / 192.168.1.1 / 0.0.0.0 / ug / 0 / 0 / 0 / eth0 =====end===== ifconfig looks like this: =====start===== eth0 link encap:ethernet hwaddr 00:80:c6:f8:d7:17 inet addr:192.168.1.10 bcast:192.168.1.255 mask:255.255.255.0 up broadcast running mtu:1500 metric:1 rx packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 tx packets:0 errors:23 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:46 collisions:0 txqueuelen:100 interrupt:18 base address:0xe800 lo link encap: local loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 mask:255.0.0.0 up loopback running mtu:3924 metric:1 blah blah blah (I hope this part isnt important) =====end===== >What is that network? Could you please elaborate on your network >configuration? Are you building a private local netwrok or trying to >connect to the internet with IP masquerade? My LAN starts with an NTT ISDN router (ipmate 1300 rd). The router is currently set to assign IP addresses automatically (dynamically) via DHCP. The router IP address is 192.168.1.1 > Sorry to ask, is the ethernet cable plugged in ? yup, category 5 cable is plugged in, NIC is securely inserted, and the cable is definitely working. (= BTW, when you see things that are correctly set up (or if things are going in a forward direction), encourage me, because as much as I want to keep Linux, this is a bit frustrating. Just a simple "this is good" or "blah blah is not a good sign" etc, would work wonders... yoroshiku Dave -------------------------------------------------------------------- Next Nomikai Meeting: February 18 (Fri) 19:00 Tengu TokyoEkiMae Next Technical Meeting: March 11 (Sat) 13:00 Temple University Japan * Topic: TBD -------------------------------------------------------------------- more info: http://www.tlug.gr.jp Sponsor: Global Online Japan
