The sound driver is generic and requires that you have one of the
common chipsets.  check your hardware docs and see if it says, then
try "grep $CHIPNAME /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/*".  You might
try all the various special module (es137* etc).  modprobe them and if
they take, they probably found the right hardware.  If they don't they
should complain (typically something uninformative like "resource
busy") and not load.
