In general, no---"Soundblaster" in this case is not hardware, it's
a (half-assed) API.  As I recall, the GUS software emulation of SB for
Windows worked fine (although it cost you all the nice GUS features
since there weren't calls for them in the SB API).

If sound.o bypasses the API and talks directly to the hardware, then
the answer would be "yes".  But I don't know soundcard.c internals so
I can't speak to that.  "cd /usr/src/linux/drivers/sound; grep ..." is 
your friend here.  :-)
