This is one of the many reasons I dumped Windows altogether about 11 years
ago and never looked back. It's bad enough having a hard drive die on you
and have to reinstall the O/S, reinstall applications and restore data
backups. If the O/S won't let you use another HD without kowtowing to its
publisher then I don't want that O/S.
