An interesting (to me) followup.  As mentioned above, for whatever
reason, I had charset at utf8 in my .muttngrc.  Changing it to utf-8
enabled muttng, as well as mutt, to view everything properly.  I don't
remember when I first set this, or why I thought it was correct.
However, ironically enough, that turned out to be the entire cause of
the problem.

Again, thanks to Mauro and Andrew.

Now, I can't decide whether to bag muttng anyway, as it seems to be
having so many problems building on FreeBSD.
