[tlug] can't view iso-2022 in mutt

I've done a bit of googling for this, but I suspect I'm using bad search
terms.

When Jim posts, his charset is ISO-2022-JP. I use mutt, often in
console, often in an xterminal. My usual terminal is mlterm.

I can't read Jim Breen's Japanese.

I run FreeBSD, fluxbox, and as I said, mlterm. The mlterm program has
an option for ISO-2022, however, setting it doesn't help.

However, if I import the message into sylpheed, which I keep around for
a few things, I can read the Japanese.

My question is where would I begin looking for this? Is it an mlterm
issue, a lack in fluxbox (unlikely, as I can see it in sylpheed) or
FreeBSD. There is no ISO-2022 locale option--locale -a | grep ja_JP
just gives me euc, utf-8 and SJIS.

I don't know enough about this to know if it's a locale thing, or
something else. IIRC, xchat (which I don't use, but have in the past)
would also use ISO-2022, so I wonder if it's something that (if this is
a totally ignorant statement, forgive me, but I know next to nothing
about programming) something that gtk2 is doing for me in sylpheed.

At any rate, I'd be grateful for some pointers. It seems to me that if
I can read it in sylpheed, I should be able to read it in some sort of
xterminal.

Thanks for reading. I should add that I can easily view anything
written in UTF-8 or Euc.

Angel: It was a bright afternoon out in front of your school. You
walked down the steps. And I loved you.
 Buffy: Why?
Angel: 'Cause I could see your heart. You held it before you for
everyone to see. And I worried that it would be bruised or torn. And
more than anything in my life I wanted to keep it safe, to warm it
with my own.
Buffy: That's beautiful. Or taken literally, incredibly gross.
Angel: I was just thinking that, too.
