Since no one else has followed up my previous message, I will a bit.

After studying the documents accompanying the P-in card for @example.com, I see
that I copied a lot of redundant modem options (AT init strings) from the
redundant options that NTT sets under Monopolysoft systems.  However,
removing the redundancies made no difference.

Also,

The undocumented ifup option MRU doesn't exist, so it was ignored.  The
documented ifup option MTU also doesn't seem to exist even though it's
documented, and it was also ignored.  Adding mru and mtu options to file
/etc/ppp/options had the effect of being noticed, but not making any
difference.

As always, ping can run forever if that's all I do.  But when trying to read
or write too much data, I guess more than the 64 bytes that ping does in
each step, the modem hangs up.  Nothing can wake up the modem after that,
except for ejecting and reinserting it.  Ejecting clears the status register
which might have held the reason for hanging up (I guess it's not NVRAM in
the modem).  There seems to be no way to find out why the modem hangs up.
