Besides wc, lots of special-purpose applications have their own, usually in Perl (TeX does, for example, and I think there's one for HTML---they ignore TeX \macros and HTML <TAG>s). Given that the problem turned out to be VJ header compression (is that a (God forbid) Linux problem or on the ISP side?), I don't see anything below that's really horrible, but there's a lot of stuff in your kernel that isn't buying you anything, some that is potentially confusing, and all of it taking up space. # # Networking options # CONFIG_PACKET=y CONFIG_NETLINK=y CONFIG_RTNETLINK=y CONFIG_NETLINK_DEV=y CONFIG_FIREWALL=y CONFIG_FILTER=y CONFIG_UNIX=y CONFIG_INET=y CONFIG_IP_MULTICAST=y CONFIG_IP_ADVANCED_ROUTER=y # I don't think you want this CONFIG_RTNETLINK=y CONFIG_NETLINK=y CONFIG_IP_MULTIPLE_TABLES=y CONFIG_IP_ROUTE_MULTIPATH=y CONFIG_IP_ROUTE_TOS=y CONFIG_IP_ROUTE_VERBOSE=y CONFIG_IP_ROUTE_LARGE_TABLES=y CONFIG_IP_ROUTE_NAT=y CONFIG_IP_PNP=y # This can be a pain in the neck CONFIG_IP_PNP_BOOTP=y # unless you do dynamic IP on a LAN CONFIG_IP_PNP_RARP=y CONFIG_IP_FIREWALL=y CONFIG_IP_FIREWALL_NETLINK=y CONFIG_NETLINK_DEV=y CONFIG_IP_ALWAYS_DEFRAG=y # This can cause problems sou-desu CONFIG_IP_ROUTE_FWMARK=y CONFIG_IP_TRANSPARENT_PROXY=y # On a notebook?
