I may have forgotten to mention that you have to kill -HUP sendmail after
that (get its PID from /var/run/sendmail/pid), and then:

kill -HUP pid-goes-here

Also, as Tony Laszlo metions, Pine does have to be set to use localhost
SMTP. Pine, as with UNIX mail clients in general, has no internal ability
to spool mail. They assume that either the host they are running on has an
MTA running that will do that, or that the host has a permanent connection
to an MX somewhere else. If you have a dial-up connection, this can
sometimes trip you up.

I'd like to see a Linux installer that asks if you will have a permanent or
dial-up connection, and sets Sendmail to spool mail for deferred delivery or
not based on your answer (with an explanation of why it's asking, of course;
we don't need Windows-style black boes, and that would be a useful and
effective way to teach new users something that is usually not mentioned in
the manual that accompanies the distro).
