this is a libc5-built-X-binary-running-with-glibc-X-libraries problem :)

on TL, the solution is:

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/X11R6/lib/libc5 appname &

of course, make appropriate path/syntax substitutions for your
distribution/shell (the above commandline will work with bash, but not
with csh).
