I'm using kernel 2.2.2 on my RedHat 5.2 box.   For me, 2.2 is better because more sound chips are supported (in my case ad1816a).   I'm also use IP masquerading, but the setting is the same as 2.0.36.   i believe current distributions are still 2.0.
