tlug: cc1plus?

When trying to compile VFU (a console mode file manager), I get this
error:

gcc -I. -I/usr/include/ncurses -O2  -c vsuti.cpp -o vsuti.o
gcc: installation problem, cannot exec `cc1plus': No such file or
directory
make: *** [vsuti.o] Error 1


Is cc1plus something that should be on my system, or something that
should be (but isn't) in the source?  I've tried this with a couple of
(consecutive) versions of the VFU -- 1.42 and 1.43 -- and gotten the
same error with both of them.
