Thank you for all the advice, including the above. I have included this line (set-default-file-coding-system *junet*) in .emacs, fwiw. (set-default-file-coding-system *ctext*) would work as well... my environment still doesn't want to grep Japanese of any encoding, apparently. Either of the following two lines in .emacs is supposed to remedy that, but so far I haven't been successful.
