Theoretically, one could do something like:

/usr/sbin/pppd crtscts 115200 /dev/ttyS0 asyncmap 00000000

... and if things are set up properly on the other end (a pppd watching
that port _passively_, assigning a fixed IP, and not requiring
authentication) it'll work.
