hm, well, we did a test install of 3.6J here, and I couldn't ping/telnet
to it after the install, but that could have been a configuration issue.
It could still be that kernel thing.  I remember the
TRANS(SocketINETConnect) thing being a part of the
2.0.x-kernel-built-with-egcs issue...
