tlug: qpopper vs. tcpd

If i look in the inetd.conf file for information on my POP server, it tells
me that something called "tcpd" is handling it.
In all my wranglings with mail server software, i came to be more familiar
with qpopper and how it works. For a while i had qpopper installed, but
it's gone back to this tcpd (came with Red Hat) because i felt i needed to
clean out all the damage i had done previously and start again.
So, i think i would like to put qpopper in, but this time do it right. I
think i can handle the installation fine, having done it once before. But
what i didn't do the first time was uninstall this tcpd thing. Do i need to
do that? tcpd seems to also handle the pop-2 stuff, which i don't know
about but someone advised me before that it's good to have around, and i
don't think qpopper handles it.
I guess it comes down to this:
If i install qpopper, will it automagically take over the POP services away
from tcpd, and make everything peachy?
Or do i have to first tell tcpd to leave POP services alone?
And what implications does this have for any of my other services, like
SMTP or sendmail?
