When pppd is invoked, what determines whether your connection uses interface ppp0, ppp1 or whatever? Starting this afternoon, it starting connecting me as ppp1, and would never connect me as ppp0. I had to reboot to reset this. I've now discovered resetting to ppp0 is unnecessary, but am curious why I'm not given ppp0 again.
