I am a real newbie at Linux, and I usually only lurk, but I have built all of my desktop machines by ordering parts from Tokyo and Osaka (I have only two at the moment). My advice would be an Asus board, all the way. The service is really great, and Asus users on the net are very enthusiastic and helpful. Look at TwoTop example.com , since they have build-it-yourself kits that include case, power supply, floppy, motherboard, CPU, CD, and sometimes VGA.
