After some discussion earlier about rdist & rsync, I decided to give rsync another try. Having used it to copy ~400MB or so from our US office, flawlessly, I'm a convert. All Hail rsync. The advantages so far are: - compresses files over the link - can copy files even when parent dir is not writable. rdist fails. - checking tree for update much faster ( subjective, didn't time it ) Disadvantages: - does not support distributing to multiple machines Tokorde, I started to put together a wrapper script around it. My goals are: - keep log files for each run - optional mail log file when finished - files/directories to copy, other options etc, should be in config file I thought of trying to parse rdist config files, but that seemed bit more ambitious than I really wanted to be. What I'm thinking of now for the config file is to have it contain three sets of information: 1) rsync command line options 2) rsync wrapper script options 3) list of source and destination files, machines I was not planning to have support for multiple destinations, ala rdist. I don't need it for my application, but maybe it would be useful. Now that I know more or less what I need, does anyone know is such a script exists? If not, any comments on feature list? Thanks for your help.
