If you write .forward as:

\smith,  smith@example.com

then the mail will replicated in two places: 
     the regular mail spool on local machine
    and forward to smith@example.com


If you write .forward as:

\smith, "/home/smith/archive"  smith@example.com

then the mail will replicated in three places: 
     the regular mail spool on local machine, 
    and forward to smith@example.com
    and a permanent archive of all incoming mails.
