Thanks for all the input on this one. This will be a virtual server, one of many on that machine, and I will not have write access to the Apache config files, so .htaccess will be the way I go on this. I could probably get the people who do have access to fix them up for me, but it will be a lot simpler if I keep this under control of myself and anyone else who will have write access to the directories for this site's files.
